One Home, One Quilt: Carrying Warmth Into the Hills of the Chepang Community

By: Sujayana Piya

The road that winds toward Upper Obang in Benighat Rorang–3 is narrow, carved along steep hillsides that seem to cling to the sky. Small houses appear one after another, standing resiliently against cold winds and difficult terrain. Life here is quiet, humble, and undeniably harsh.

In this remote Chepang settlement, where basic necessities rarely arrive with ease, a small but deeply meaningful initiative has begun to touch lives. Golden Vision Society has stepped forward with a campaign titled “One Home, One Quilt”, a promise of warmth for each of the 59 households that call this hillside home.

Where Hardship Meets Hope

During my time speaking with local families, one truth repeatedly surfaced:
Life is tough, but hope still breathes here.

Most households lack proper warm clothing, and quilts — something many of us consider ordinary — are a luxury they cannot afford. The cold nights are especially unforgiving for children and the elderly. Health services remain distant; economic opportunities, even more so.

Yet despite these challenges, there is a quiet strength in every face. A determination to endure. And, now, a sense of comfort knowing that someone has remembered them.

A Simple Motto, A Powerful Impact

The beauty of the initiative lies in its simplicity.
One home. One quilt.

Just one.
But for families in Upper Obang, that “one” carries warmth, dignity, and reassurance.

A mother wrapped the new quilt around her shoulders and, with emotion in her voice, shared something that stayed with me:

“We lack many things. But today, holding this quilt, I felt — someone finally saw our struggles.”

It is moments like this that reveal the quiet power of small acts.

More Than Aid — An Act of Humanity

What struck me most was how the Golden Vision Society team approached the community. They didn’t simply hand out quilts and leave. They sat with families, spoke with them, listened to them.

They heard not only about their hardships, but also their ambitions — the dreams they still dared to nurture. They documented what the community may need in the future, building the foundation for a longer journey of support.

This wasn’t charity.
It was connection.

And connection, in places like Obang, is transformative.

59 Homes, 59 Stories

The numbers are humble — only 59 homes. Yet each home carries its own story of resilience.

A quilt placed in each household may appear small from the outside, but in the cold hills of Obang, it is an offering of comfort. A reminder that their lives matter, their hardships are seen, and their warmth matters too.

One volunteer put it best:

“We’re not just delivering quilts. We’re standing beside them. ‘One Home, One Quilt’ has reminded us that even the smallest step can hold great meaning for someone else.”

A Call to Walk Together

The hills of Upper Obang may be remote, but compassion travels far. Golden Vision Society’s effort carries a message that deserves to be echoed:

Humanity does not require grand gestures.
Sometimes, it starts with a quilt.
Sometimes, it begins with remembering someone who has been forgotten.

If initiatives like this continue — supported by goodwill, hands joined together, and hearts willing to help — then warmth, dignity, and hope will keep flowing into communities that need it the most. One home. One quilt.
One step closer to a warmer, kinder world.
